Whatever the source, sewage is treated as Category 3 water under the IICRC S500 standard. That means containment of the affected area, extraction of standing waste, removal of porous materials that absorbed it, cleaning and disinfection of structural surfaces, and drying verified with moisture readings before repairs begin.
Clearing or repairing the sewer line itself is plumbing work. A licensed plumber or drain service handles the blockage; septic tanks and drainfields are handled by permitted septic professionals. Cleanup handles the contamination inside the building.
