Star at a glance
Star sits along the Boise River on State Highway 44. Much of the city is served by the Star Sewer & Water District, while some rural and acreage properties nearby use septic systems. Because Star crosses the Ada–Canyon county line, septic oversight depends on which side a property is on: Central District Health in Ada County, Southwest District Health in Canyon County.
New construction
Most of Star’s homes have been built recently and sit over crawl spaces. Like other fast-growing parts of the valley, common issues include:
- Drain line separations under the house
- Construction debris or improper slope in new laterals
- Wipes and grease building up in main lines
See crawl space sewage cleanup.
Acreage and septic
Horse properties, small farms and larger lots around Star often rely on septic. If the tank or drainfield fails, wastewater can come up through the lowest drains. Irrigation water running over a drainfield can make saturation worse. See septic backup cleanup.
Who to contact about the public sewer
Properties connected to the Star Sewer & Water District should contact the district for problems in the public main. Owners are generally responsible for the private lateral.
Common Star cleanup jobs
- Toilet and drain backups
- Crawl space drain leaks
- Septic backups on acreage
- Blackwater cleanup of flooring, drywall and cabinets
New townhomes and shared lines
Some of Star’s newer communities include attached townhomes. Where units share a building drain or lateral, a blockage can affect more than one home. Neighbors and HOAs may need to coordinate on clearing the line and on cleanup in each affected unit.
Horse properties and outdoor contamination
On horse and small-farm properties, a failing septic system can surface in pastures or near water troughs. Fence animals away from wet areas over the tank or drainfield until the system is repaired, and keep irrigation water from carrying sewage across the property.
Winter freezes
Cold snaps in the Treasure Valley can freeze drain and supply lines in poorly insulated crawl spaces, especially on the north side of a home. A cracked drain line that thaws can leak sewage under the house, so a sewer smell after a hard freeze is worth checking.
Buying an acreage home near Star
If you are looking at a home on septic around Star, ask the seller for pumping and repair records, the tank’s location and size, and the age of the drainfield. Look for signs of past sewage problems: staining around floor drains, replaced flooring in just one bathroom, or odor in the crawl space. A septic inspection before closing can prevent a costly surprise.
Homes near the Boise River
Star sits along the Boise River, and properties close to the river can see higher groundwater, especially during spring runoff and irrigation season. When a sewage leak happens in a crawl space on these lots, groundwater can slow drying. Moisture readings confirm when the structure is actually dry.
Shop and barn bathrooms
Acreage homes often have a bathroom in a shop or barn tied to the septic system. These fixtures get less use, so a slow leak or a backup can go unnoticed. After any septic problem, check every building on the property.
